Before You Go: How to Source Fabric in Italy
1. State your budget upfront — always
The single most important thing. Every supplier will ask for your budget. State it clearly and early: it saves everyone time and gets you taken seriously, whether it’s €500 or €50,000.
2. Introduce yourself properly
Say your name, your country, what your business does and what you’re looking for. Be specific — vague enquiries get ignored, a clear brief gets results.
3. Don’t confirm an order too fast
Deadstock moves fast, but confirming and then cancelling is worse. Visit several suppliers, cut small samples, review, then decide. Most suppliers will hold a selection for 24–48 hours if you ask politely.
4. WhatsApp is the standard
Most Italian suppliers use WhatsApp, not email. Install it before you arrive, save numbers as you go, and send one clear message with all your questions rather than ten short ones.
5. Know the working hours
Most warehouses open Monday–Friday, 8am–1pm and 2:30–6pm. Saturday hours vary, so call ahead. The district largely closes in August. May–June and September–October are the best months to visit.
6. What to bring
- Business cards
- A large tote for swatches and samples
- Small scissors for cutting samples (not every warehouse has them)
- Your phone for WhatsApp and photos
- Comfortable shoes — warehouse floors are concrete
Key Italian phrases
- Quanto costa al metro?
How much per metre? - Quanti metri ci sono?
How many metres are there? - Posso avere un campione?
Can I have a sample? - Qual è il minimo d’ordine?
What’s the minimum order? - Avete un listino prezzi?
Do you have a price list?
Payments & SIM cards
Cash vs card. Most warehouses accept bank transfer, some accept card, and a few smaller ones still prefer cash — always ask before ordering. ATMs (Bancomat) are everywhere in Prato. Tipping isn’t expected; rounding up a restaurant bill is appreciated.
Local SIM. TIM, Vodafone and Iliad all have shops in Prato centre. Bring your passport. A prepaid SIM with 10–20GB costs around €10–15 and works immediately.
